Fishing Boat off Sheerness, George Stainton, oil on canvas

Sale Price:£875.00 Original Price:£975.00
sale

This 19th century oil on canvas depicts a seascape off the coast at The Nore. George Stainton (1838-1890) was a noted marine artist who specialised in tranquil dawn scenes and more action-filled compositions in choppy seas; this is an example of the latter.

Red pennants and the sailor’s red hat draw the eye to the foreground, while in the background we observe other shipping and the shoreline at Sheerness, with the Great Mill to the left of the canvas. Overhead, the sky shows a clearing storm and gulls circle the vessel.

Framed, signed verso.

The frame: 50cm wide, 29.5cm high

The picture: 45cm wide, 24.5cm high
