This work, a watercolour heightened with white on cream paper, is signed by the artist C Pearson (Cornelius Pearson), and is dated 1868. It depicts the lake at Llanberis, with the peaks of Snowdonia towering over the water, a mother and her child walking along the shoreline road, and a flock of sheep alongside.  A dinghy lies beached on the lakeshore in the foreground.

Cornelius Pearson was one of the great landscape watercolourists of the latter half of the 19th century. His works are extremely distinctive in both style and composition, often depicting a sweeping mountain backdrop over a tranquil lake, with sheep or cattle and sometimes human figures in the foreground. The artist travelled frequently to Snowdonia and the Lake District in search of inspiration for these scenes.

This peaceful composition is a quintessential mid-Victorian watercolour landscape by one of the period’s most celebrated artists.

Dimensions:

The frame: 57cm wide, 37cm high

The picture: 40cm wide, 18.5cm high
